Today, couples often ask our team here at RWN what the future holds. Nervous, and rightly so, they are uncertain about what the status of their own legal rights will be in the months and years ahead.

When asked, we like to offer a few happy insights... and a little bit of hope.

'We're not legal experts, but our friends and associates who are tell us that it's likely SCOTUS will overturn the Obergefell decision, which means that LGBTQ+ marriage rights will return to the states. That will be devastating of course, and will have very real consequences for couples and our families all across America.

'But, without trying to downplay the legitimate impact of such a decision... it can be helpful to keep in mind a few things. For instance, in 1999, very few members of the LGBTQ+ community thought it would ever be remotely possible for them to have access to equal marriage rights within their own lifetimes. And yet, in 2015 the Obergefell decision passed. Even during the decade preceding that landmark decision, state upon state passed their own marriage recognition laws, some being civil unions, some full marriage rights, some expanded domestic partnership recognitions.

'And beyond that, during the years between 2000 and 2015, here at RainbowWeddingNetwork we could discern another kind of change: more parents (of adult children) were attending our LGBTQ+ wedding expos and helping their kid/s plan their celebrations... More businesses were coming forward -from independent business owners to corporate- to support our work as a wedding resource for LGBTQ+ couples. We published the nation's first LGBTQ+ wedding magazine, from 2006-2012, and a coloring book for kids with 2 moms or 2 dads, and those publications did quite well. Stock imagery online began showing same-gender couples interacting more realistically; the words 'marriage equality' were heard more and more not just across political platforms but within the general sectors as well. In public places, we began to see couples hold hands; companies like Subaru began running inclusive ads.

'Change -real change- was taking place. And not just legal change, but a cultural shift within the mindset of people all across the country: It wasn't just our community's access to equal rights that was progressing; it was the general public's awareness about the issues, and the growing enthusiasm of their support, that was taking hold.'

And so, even if Obergefell is overturned in the next year or so... We have reason to believe that even such an impactful and heartbreaking decision will NOT dial back the cultural shift, at least not 100 percent. And so, the pendulum will swing back again in favor of Equality. And that swing will not take decades and decades: too much progress has already been made.

Of course there are naysayers and citizens in the USA who are against LGBTQ+ equality, and staunchly opposed to marriage rights for our community. But they are not in the majority.

An expansion of equality is the promise of our nation, and though it takes time and all too often there are chapters that are arduous, unjust, brutal or bloody, that promise endures. Despite the political climate we find ourselves in, here in 2025, the experiences within the LGBTQ+ marriage equality movement this past 25 years have shown us -all of us- that the promise does indeed remain intact.

It is that promise we strive for, and we must set our sights upon, day after day. It may seem idealistic, but Love Prevails, and that includes fairness and equality. As a community we may have a difficult road ahead, for awhile, but it will ease again. We must stay the course, and do what we can to buoy ourselves, uplift others, and continue to work toward that higher cause.

In living out the promise of a landmark milestone such as the Obergefell decision, such words are vital to keep in mind.

The status of our marriage rights, March 31 2025

Having been in existence 25 years, here at RainbowWeddingNetwork.com, we do have connections to business vendors of all kinds across the United States. And that of course includes legal professionals.

No one can foresee the future, but the lawyers we are in contact with tell us that they believe it is highly probable that a case will advance to the US Supreme Court either this year or in 2026, and the resulting SCOTUS decision will lead to the overturn of Obergefell v. Hodges. And at that point the issue of LGBTQ+ marriage equality will be returned to the individual states.

What will happen next? Specifics remain hard to pin down, b/c of various dynamic factors at play at the federal, state and local levels. We urge couples to take steps to protect your relationship through legal documentation, as well as the relationships within your family (specifically if you have children under age 18): Review your powers of attorney, wills, and other important documents. If possible, be sure your passports are up-to-date.

And most of all, find a lawyer who is experienced in LGBTQ+ matters and seek their professional advice.

Here is a recent article from NBC News, that reminds us just how important it is to stay informed and proactive.

Lawmakers in 9 states propose measures to undermine same-sex marriage rights: A Michigan Republican introduced a resolution Tuesday urging the Supreme Court to reverse its 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges same-sex marriage ruling.  https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-politics-and-policy/lawmakers-9-states-propose-measures-undermine-sex-marriage-rights-rcna193743

And here is an update from proactive citizens in Battle Creek about these issues:

Hurricane Helene, Fall 2024

RWN's office, for 20 years, was based in Asheville NC.  We understand the impact of a storm like Helene and our thoughts are with those affected by the recent hurricane, throughout the Southeast and beyond.

Thanks to those who are finding ways to assist those affected:  from those who are still dealing with flooding issues, to those who have lost their loved ones, those who have lost their homes or livelihoods... and even to those whose wedding venue was impacted and therefore are dealing with issues surrounding their celebrations.  The impact has effects large and small, unthinkable and rather simple, very long-term and also those in the most immediate sense...  Again, our thanks to those who are finding ways to assist everyone in the area who has been impacted.

One important way each of us can take action, of course, is to remember important and grave moments like this when we consider our options about voting.  The flood our team at RainbowWeddingNetwork dealt with in 2004, when our office was lost that year due to a hurricane, brought the rise of our local river up 9 feet.  Helene brought the water level of that same river up 20 feet.  The storms today are more powerful, more disastrous, more deadly.

The water temperature in the southern Atlantic Ocean is measurable, and that temperature is rising:  the results are measurable too.

The issues surrounding climate change are something we can take into account at the ballot box.  We, the founders of RWN, encourage all of our site visitors to reesearch these issues, and similar important issues that matter personally to you, and make your voting decisions -up and down the ballot- based on the factual information you yourself have discovered through your research, so that all of us can take action toward a safer future together.

Democracy at stake, 4th of July 2024

25 years ago my wife and I launched RainbowWeddingNetwork.com, the world's first online wedding resource dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community. It's hard to believe it's been a quarter of a century, but the calendar tells me it has... and my greying hair seems to also tell a similar tale.

During that span of time, we've witnessed a great many things, and several election cycles. Most of them quite heated, some more contentious than others. Divisiveness has been sown, scapegoats have been named, the rights of the LGBTQ+ minority have been vollied like a ping pong ball to incite voters to cast their ballots one way or another. Death threats to us, personally, and threats to our little company, have spiked and then plateaued. It's been a volatile time.

I could go on for several paragraphs about the milestones we've seen and celebrated across the United States, the landmark decisions we have witnessed, the courageous LGBTQ+ heroes we have lauded... about the LGBTQ+ wedding expos our company has produced, about the tens of thousands of vendors and couples across the country we have met, chatted with, and had the honor to support and moreover to learn from. But my post today is focused on one point, and it's a vital one.

Yesterday's SCOTUS decision, July 1, 2024, regarding presidential immunity has ramifications for our entire country, in ways that can easily be extrapolated well into the future. This goes beyond the looming threat of another Trump presidency, but that in and of itself is a hurdle we must soon face.

So many things are on the ballot this Fall: LGBTQ+ rights, certainly... and also more broadly civll rights of so many factions throughout the country, national security, climate issues, education, social security, immigration, serious economic issues, student debt, our standing in the international community, and so much more. :The willingness to hold Truth as recognizable, and non-negotiable. The unwavering belief that Democracy based on the foundational principle "We the People" must not be swept aside with a pen.

Throughout many decades in this nation, even well before Stonewall, members of the LGBTQ+ community have found ways to forge onward and enact progress through grassroots efforts. We have found ways to mobilize ourselves, uplift others, keep an eye on expanding the vision of equality in America. And now, in 2024, it is time to re-energize ourselves, despite the swirling chaos, distrust and weariness, and the disheartening headlines: to dig even deeper and take further substantive action.

Obergefell will likely be overturned in the next year or two, no matter what happens with the presidential election. But we must not lose heart. Anti-trans legislation will still be proposed at the local, state and federal levels in the months ahead. But we must not let that overshadow our convictions. We must not let any of the headlines or threats or injustices deter our stamina nor our willingness to head to the ballot box.

This year, perhaps more than any other in recent history, as a community of active citizens, we have a vital job to do.

We must inform ourselves and vote mindfully up and down the ticket in November. Too much is at stake.

This year's election we're voting not just for political intangibles or lofty concepts, we're voting yes or no for Democracy itself.

Taking Inspiration from Ken Burns, Pride 2024

My wife Cindy and I launched RainbowWeddingNetwork.com back in the year 2000; at that time just one state in the USA had begun the enactment of civil unions. It would be four more years before the Goodridge decision in Massachusetts provided full marriage rights in that state; 11 more after that before the passage of Obergefell. The dynamics with regard to LGBTQ+ marriage recogntion would ping-pong back and forth for years -decades, really- and it felt like a roller coaster ride. Election cycles brought pushback at the ballot box regarding equality for our community, as well as surges of death threats to our office.

Cindy and I, and our team at RWN, have witnessed and been immersed in the drama surrounding LGBTQ+ marriage rights, and believe that in many ways we have taken active roles through our work and services at RainbowWeddingNetwork.com to forward the cause.

This election cycle is not different, in many ways. We get more death threats at our office. We note the spike in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, proposed legislative motions and campaign assertions regarding the stripping away of rights. As in past years, we are certainly aware that other minorities and groups are being scapegoated as well.

And yet this election cycle is different, and we must all not only pay attention, but take ongoing and fervent action. The foundational tenets of our nation are being threatened in a way that is more pointed, more specific, more hotly verbalized, and in a multitude of ways. The rights of the LGBTQ+ community are at risk, but the cause for concern is much broader than that: the rights of all Americans are at stake.

I cannot state it better than historian Ken Burns. I encourage you to take a few moments to listen to his recent comments during his commencement speech at Brandeis University... and pass on the link.

"We are at an existential crossroads: the choice could not be clearer..."
And quoting Singer: Reminders about "the kinship of the soul..."
And did you know that in its Greek roots, the word 'enthusiasm' means "God in us...?"
"Denounce oppression everywhere."

A Blessing from the Pope this Holiday Season, December 2023

Exciting Equality Update - Great News for this year's Holiday Season!

No matter your faith or spiritual leaning, progress toward a broader vision of Equality is worth noting... and CELEBRATING.  We are so excited for our Catholic brothers and sisters, who now have greater freedom to marry at the altar of their choice, and we rejoice at the gifts this announcement brings for everyone around the world, within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

Just 2 years ago, the Vatican proclaimed that God "cannot bless sin" in a decision about same-gender commitments. But this week, in an historic declaration, Pope Francis granted his formal approval allowing Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples (though this is not a full endorsement of their marriage): This motion marks the church's most permissive decree yet on the issue!
